Natural sunlight helps promote the production of Vitamin D, which is also available as a dietary supplement. According to Health Canada, a full day in the sun can help provide up to 20,000IU of vitamin D. Researchers suggest that humans need at least 4000 to 5000 IU per day of vitamin D3 for optimal bone health, cancer prevention, cardiovascular function, auto-immune disease (i.e., MS, lupus, type 1 diabetes) prevention, muscle strength, and resistance to infection. In addition to its role as an essential source of good health, Vitamin D can also help improve the sense of well-being, improve sleep, reduce inflammation, and relieve depression, all of which contribute to happiness. High doses may very well relieve some of the negativity in your life. All of this explains why many of us tend to get sad and depressed during the winter months with limited sun exposure.
Happiness starts by getting out in the sun, without which makes us sad during the winter months. Vitamin D is produced naturally in the skin by sunlight and is also available as a dietary supplement. A day in the sun may provide up to 20,000 IU of vitamin D. In warmer weather, exposure of the arms, legs, and head for 15-30 minutes can provide several thousand IU of vitamin D. Just don’t apply sunscreen until you get your fill of this important vitamin. But don’t get burned in the process, because that is what’s linked to skin cancer. Scientists are now suggesting that upwards of 4000 to 5000 IU per day of vitamin D3 is optimum for bone health, cancer prevention, cardiovascular function, auto-immune disease (i.e., MS, lupus, type 1 diabetes) prevention, muscle strength, and resistance to infection. Unfortunately, the medical authorities are still recommending a paltry 400-800 IU daily. Vitamin D also helps increase the sense of well-being, improve sleep, reduce inflammation, and relieve depression, all of which contribute to happiness. High doses may very well relieve some of the negativity in your life.
The consumption of omega-3 fatty acids is also important for happiness and quality of life. Omega-3 fatty acids have many positive effects on the body, they work to support the heart, brain, mood, joint, skin, immune, allergic, digestive, metabolic and vision health. According to Health Canada, Omega-3 fish oil contains essential source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for the maintenance of good health; to help maintain/support cardiovascular health; to reduce serum triglycerides/triacylglycerols; to reduce the pain of rheumatoid arthritis in adults when used in conjunction with conventional therapy; to support cognitive health and/or brain function; to support the development of the brain, eyes and nerves in children up to 12 years of age and to promote healthy mood balance.

The Know-How to Looking Younger! https://www.nutralab.ca/the-know-how-to-looking-younger/ Tue, 13 Nov 2018 19:42:43 +0000 https://nutralab-ca.zx7y23j8-liquidwebsites.com/?p=1228 Did you know that many of the illnesses and diseases that are prevalent in today’s society can be prevented by taking the right supplements? Supplements can help the human body in a variety of ways such as boosting immunity, helping to distress, improving quality of life, and even slow down the aging process.
Some people may ask, “How do I know if I need a dietary supplement?”
Ask yourself the following questions in order to determine if you may need supplements for a healthier lifestyle:
  •  Am I Stressed? If you are constantly stressed-out due to work, relationships, family or any other situation, your adrenal glands may be working overtime. Stress can cause rapid depletion of nutrients and minerals in the body.
  •  Am I on a Diet? If you are on a low-carb, low-fat or any form of diet you are probably not receiving the vitamins necessary for healthy living. Individuals on diets very rarely eat foods from all the major food groups and even when they do, they usually do not meet the required amounts.
  •  Is My Immune System Up to Par? Do you constantly find yourself catching colds and the flu more frequently than others? You may need to boost your immune system with vitamins and minerals to help the body fight these viruses.
  •  Do I want to Prevent Serious Illness? Supplements containing omega-3 fish oils and antioxidants can help prevent many common ailments including arthritis, like cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease, and macular degeneration.
  •  Do I smoke? Smoking uses up vitamin C and puts you at higher risk of osteoporosis, this risk can be offset by taking vitamins and calcium.
  •  Am I Pregnant? Pregnant and hormonal women often lack vitamin B-6. If you do not receive enough of this vitamin it can be extremely harmful to you and your baby.
Eating a balanced meal containing meats, vegetables and fruits are definitely encouraged. However, the nutritional value of our food nowadays cannot be compared to the nutritional value of the same food 50 years ago. Depletion of soil nutrients, food processing, food transportation, and genetically modified products are only some of the reasons why a healthy diet may no longer be enough. Even for a completely healthy person, supplements are invaluable for greater overall wellness and illness prevention.

Reduce Risk of Coronary Artery Disease https://www.nutralab.ca/reduce-risk-of-coronary-artery-disease/ Tue, 13 Nov 2018 19:41:49 +0000 https://nutralab-ca.zx7y23j8-liquidwebsites.com/?p=1226 According to recent research published by Nutrition Research, Taiwanese scientists and researchers conducted a case-control study with 45 people who have coronary artery disease (CAD) and 87 healthy individuals. The study measured the blood level of both Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin B6 (pyridoxal 5’ – phosphate) level in all study patients and fount CAD patients to have a significantly lower level of both nutrients when compared to the control group. The researchers of this study concluded that an increased blood level of Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin B6 could be associated with reduced risk of coronary artery diseases.
Coenzyme Q10 is a compound found naturally in every cell of the body and serves as a vital nutrient for mitochondria, the energy-producing center of the cells. Coenzyme Q10 boosts energy, enhances the immune system, and acts as an antioxidant. Antioxidants are substances that scavenge free radicals, damaging compounds in the body that alter cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but environmental toxins (including cigarette smoking and air pollutions) can also increase the number of these damaging particles. Free radicals are believed to contribute to the aging process as well as the development of a number of health issues, including heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants such as Coenzyme Q10 can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.
Vitamin B6, otherwise known as pyridoxine, is one of the 8 B vitamins. All B vitamins help the body convert food into glucose, which is then used by the body to produce energy. They also help the body metabolize fats and proteins. Like all other B vitamins, vitamin B6 is water-soluble; therefore they cannot be stored in the body. Vitamin B6 performs a wide variety of functions in the body and is involved in more than 100 enzymatic reactions, mostly concerned with protein metabolism. It would be difficult to find a chemical category of molecules in the body that do not depend in some way on vitamin B6 for their production. Many of the building blocks of protein and DNA require adequate supplies of B6 for synthesis.

Vitamin E may lower liver cancer risk https://www.nutralab.ca/vitamin-e-may-lower-liver-cancer-risk/ Tue, 13 Nov 2018 19:41:02 +0000 https://nutralab-ca.zx7y23j8-liquidwebsites.com/?p=1224 The liver is the largest organ in the body, and it plays a vital role in keeping the human body healthy and functional. Some of its main day-to-day functions include storing vitamins and nutrients, producing a protein used for blood clotting, and creating bile used for digestion. The liver also helps to break down and filter out toxins from the blood. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 700,000 people are diagnosed with liver cancer each year throughout the world. Liver cancer is the third most common cause of cancer mortality in the world, with more than 600,000 deaths each year. It is also the fifth most common cancer found in men and the seventh most common cancer found in women.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that has long been known for its various benefits effects on the body, and recent experimental studies now suggest that vitamin E may prevent DNA damage. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that acts to protect our cells against the effects of free radicals that can damage cells and contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Vitamin E deficiency induces poor nerve conduction that leads to neurological problems. Besides lowering the chance to get cancer and cardiovascular diseases, vitamin E can also help prevent and delay age-related muscular degeneration, as well as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Symptoms of vitamin E deficiency include muscle weakness, loss of muscle mass, abnormal eye movements, vision problems, and unsteady walking.

Owing to its antioxidant properties, vitamin E contributes greatly to skin and hair care through its ability to promote the circulation of blood to the scalp. Vitamin E also helps to alleviate fatigue and strengthen capillary walls while nourishing the cells. Another wonderful benefit of vitamin E is that it can help treat scars, acne, and wrinkles because through its ability to speed up cell regeneration. This creates an anti-aging effect, which makes the skin look younger.

According to a study published on July 17 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, high consumption of vitamin E either from diet or vitamin supplements may lower the risk of liver cancer. The study was conducted by investigators from the Shanghai Cancer Institute, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and the National Cancer Institute.

To determine the relationship between vitamin E intake and liver cancer risk, researchers analyzed data from 132,837 individuals in China who were enrolled in the Shanghai Women’s Health Study (SWHS) from 1997-2000 or the Shanghai Men’s Health Study (SMHS) from 2002-2006, the two population-based cohort studies were conducted together by both the Shanghai Cancer Institute and Vanderbilt University.

The researchers conducted in-person interviews to gather information on the participant’s dietary habits. The investigators then compared the liver cancer risk between participants that consumed a high vitamin E diet to those that had a low vitamin E diet. The study analysis included 267 liver cancer patients (118 women and 149 men) who were diagnosed within two years after study enrollment. The results showed that Vitamin E intake from diet and vitamin E supplement use were both associated with a lower risk of liver cancer.

The study concluded that there was a clear, inverse dose-response relationship between vitamin E intake and liver cancer risk. In other words, high consumption of vitamin E either from diet or supplements was related to the lowered risk of liver cancer.

Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract Proven to Help Lose Weight Naturally https://www.nutralab.ca/pure-green-coffee-bean-extract-proven-to-help-lose-weight-naturally/ Tue, 13 Nov 2018 19:39:24 +0000 https://nutralab-ca.zx7y23j8-liquidwebsites.com/?p=1218  Markham, ON., July 26, 2012 – Click here to see the original article.

Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract as promoted by Dr. Oz on his television program is a new dietary supplement now available in capsules. Green coffee beans are still fresh and not brown because they have not been roasted to use as brewed coffee. The natural compound contained in the green beans is a chlorogenic acid which becomes destroyed in the process of roasting.

On his show in April, Dr. Lindsey Duncan was his guest. He is a Neuropathic Doctor and Certified Nutritionist. They both endorsed Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract as an excellent method to safely lose weight. Dr. Oz emphasized the importance of using only 100 per percent Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract with no additives. Supplements that include gelatin, maltodextrine, silica, microcrystalline cellulose or magnesium stearate along with Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract should be avoided. The percentage of chlorogenic acid should also be considered as some supplements have a low percentage.

Chlorogenic Acid combined with caffeine has been found to be effective for weight loss. Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract has been shown to promote the liver to burn fat, increase metabolism, and inhibit fat absorption and the release of glucose into the blood after eating. Chlorogenic acid is a natural phytochemical that is highly concentrated in Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract.

Chlorogenic acid found in Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract is not seen in plasma after ingestion nor perceived to be absorbed by the small intestine. This leads researchers to conclude that it adheres to certain compounds and hinders the absorption of fat in the diet. Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract is considered to be the most effective for weight loss in pre-obese adults.

One of the major studies done for weight loss with Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract was by Dr. Joe Vinson along with Mysore Nagendran and Bryan Burnham. They gave 16 overweight people Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract every day. The participants consumed a diet of 2400 calories per day which is above the recommended average, did not have many exercises and they still lost weight. The average weight loss was 17 pounds over 12 weeks. This is a 10.5 percent decrease in overall body weight and a 16 percent loss in body fat. Dr. Vinson concluded that taking Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract along with a healthy diet and regular exercise is an effective, safe and inexpensive way to lose weight.

Even though higher and lower dose of Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract were given during research, the daily suggested dose of Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract is 800 milligrams per day. This is best taken in 400 milligrams doses twice a day about a half hour before breakfast and dinner. The schedule does not have to be exact and if one dose is missed, it is not a problem. However, for best results, it needs to have an accumulative effect, so Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract should be taken routinely.

Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract need not be ingested with food, but it is good to take it with a large glass of water. It can be taken with other vitamin supplements, but if prescription drugs are regularly taken, a doctor should be consulted.

It is a well-known fact that one of the biggest health issues today is obesity. It causes many diseases including coronary artery disease, diabetes, metabolic disorders, heart disease, high blood pressure and in some cases, cancer. This is why Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract is so important. It is considered a magical substance according to Dr. Oz and Dr. Lindsey Duncan.

The chlorogenic acid in Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract is twice as effective in absorbing oxygen free radicals as the two established antioxidants grape seed extract and green tea. It also averts hydroxyl radicals which contribute to the degradation of cells. Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract is manufactured from the green beans of the Arabica coffee plant. This plant has higher amounts and better quality chlorogenic acid and caffeic acids than the robusta coffee plant. These are the main compounds responsible for the antioxidant activity. Capsules of Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract contain up to 50 percent chlorogenic acid with no other additives.

Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract provides other benefits for good health. Chlorogenic acid is a polyphenol that neutralizes several classes of carcinogenic compounds. It prevents them from damaging DNA and causing mutations that can cause other illnesses.

Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract also helps prevent cardiovascular disease. Chlorogenic acid has been shown to help decrease plasma homocysteine levels. Homocysteine concentrations in the blood are a risk gauge for cardiovascular disease.

Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract is also good for treating hypertension. It regenerates vitamin E and neutralizes free radicals to inhibit oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) degradation that damages arteries and accelerates atherosclerosis, thus preventing cardiovascular disease.

Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure was shown to decrease significantly during the studies of Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract consumption.

There have also been several studies that suggest that users of the chlorogenic acid in Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract have substantially less chance to get type two diabetes. This has been shown to be because of the effect of chlorogenic acid on the metabolism of glucose. Stored in the liver as a polysaccharide called glycogen, glucose is released into the bloodstream by the enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase where it circulates to the organs. This process is called glycogenolysis. If this process is inhibited, the body will get its energy from burning fat. When fat stores are burned, weight is lost.

Another benefit of taking Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract regularly is an increase in the effectiveness of pain medicine including migraine medications.

During all the studies of Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract no side effects have ever been reported. It contains one fifth the amount of caffeine as one cup of coffee, which may have an effect on some people.

Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract is completely different from brewed coffee. Not only is the chlorogenic acid destroyed, but brewed coffee contains cafestol, which is a diterpene and can increase LDL cholesterol by about 20 percent over long periods. The effects of cafestol are negligible if the coffee is filtered. Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract does not contain cafestol, but it does contain caffeic acids which boost energy levels. Since it helps the body burn more fat compared to carbohydrates, Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract could be of benefit for muscle fatigue for bodybuilders and athletes.

The green coffee bean has a bitter flavor and is not easy to eat. It would also be difficult to know how much of the important chlorogenic acid has been ingested. This is why Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract in capsules is not only convenient but gives an accurate dose.

Raspberry Ketone: What science says about this top selling weight loss product on the market https://www.nutralab.ca/raspberry-ketone-what-science-says-about-this-top-selling-weight-loss-product-on-the-market/ Tue, 13 Nov 2018 19:38:05 +0000 https://nutralab-ca.zx7y23j8-liquidwebsites.com/?p=1204 Markham, ON., July 26, 2012 – Click here to see the original article.

Research has shown that raspberry ketone can help in your weight-loss efforts, especially when paired with regular exercise and a well-balanced diet of healthy and whole foods.

Raspberry ketone is the primary aroma compound of red raspberries. This compound regulates adiponectin, a protein used by the body to regulate metabolism. Raspberry ketone causes the fat within your cells to get broken up more effectively, helping your body burn fat faster. The recommended dose is 100mg per day. To get the same benefit from the whole fruit, you’d have to consume 90 pounds of raspberries.

What is raspberry ketone?
Raspberry ketone is an aromatic component present in raspberries and other fruits. It can also be produced synthetically in a lab.

Why has raspberry ketone been targeted for weight loss?
Scientists had previously shown that pungent compounds with similar chemical structures, such as capsaicin and synephrine, had lipolytic activity – causing fat breakdown – in rats fed a high-fat diet and in vitro fat cells.

What did scientists do in the lab?
In one experiment, to test the effect on obesity, mice were fed a high-fat diet plus raspberry ketone for about 10 weeks. Other experiments were carried out in vitro (in test tubes, Petri dishes, etc.).

What did scientists learn about fat cells?
Researchers observed that, compared to controls, raspberry ketone decreased the amount of fat in the liver and visceral adipose (abdominal fat) tissues of mice. It also significantly increased norepinephrine-induced lipolysis (the decomposition of fat) in some rat fat cells.

Researchers also tested in vitro fat cells with raspberry ketone and found that they showed greater evidence of breakdown when compared to controls.

What did scientists find out about the relationship between raspberry ketone and adiponectin?
Adiponectin is a protein used by the body to regulate metabolism. Higher levels are associated with fewer fat stores. Scientists studied the effects of raspberry ketones on in vitro fat cells and observed a higher secretion of adiponectin when compared to controls.

What did scientists conclude?
They concluded that raspberry ketone prevents and improves obesity and fatty liver in certain animal models. While the exact mechanism has not been thoroughly understood, these effects appear to stem from the action of raspberry ketone in altering the lipid metabolism, or more specifically, in increasing norepinephrine-induced lipolysis in white adipocytes (fat cells).

Scientists speculate that raspberry ketone stimulates the energy metabolism via a mechanism similar to that of capsaicin. Capsaicin, a compound found in chili peppers, has been looked at in humans for weight loss.

In another study, the effect of raspberry ketone on energy metabolism was examined by measuring metabolic markers in brown fat tissue, a special kind of fat that generates heat in a process called thermogenesis. These results reportedly indicate that raspberry ketone activates the brown fat thermogenesis and enhances energy metabolism. In any case, more detailed studies are called for to determine a mechanism for raspberry ketone.

What do the animal data on raspberry ketone mean for humans?

Mice and rats are the most widely used animal models in biomedical research. It is important to note that besides being non-human mammals, these animals are housed under standard laboratory conditions, and the use of overweight and unstimulated animals as standard controls may bias the measured experimental outcomes.

Animal models and test tube experiments are important parts of scientific discovery and innovation, especially at early stages. Positive early results in the lab can be promising, but these do not always mean the same outcomes will occur in humans.

A Scientific ‘Go’ for Commerical Production of Vitamin-D Enhanced Mushrooms https://www.nutralab.ca/a-scientific-go-for-commerical-production-of-vitamin-d-enhanced-mushrooms/ Tue, 13 Nov 2018 19:34:47 +0000 https://nutralab-ca.zx7y23j8-liquidwebsites.com/?p=1181 ScienceDaily.com | September 7, 2011, | Click here to view the original article

A new commercial processing technology is suitable for boosting the vitamin D content of mushrooms and has no adverse effects on other nutrients in those tasty delicacies, the first study on the topic has concluded. The technology, which involves exposing mushrooms to the same kind of ultraviolet light that produces suntans, can greatly boost mushrooms’ vitamin D content.

The study appears in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Ryan Simon and colleagues note that many people do not get enough vitamin D in their diets. Few natural foods are high in the vitamin, and there are limits on what foods can be fortified to boost the vitamin D content. Although few people realize it, mushrooms are an excellent natural source of vitamin D. Some producers have embraced results of earlier studies, suggesting that exposing mushrooms to ultraviolet B (UVB) light can significantly boost the vitamin D content.

The scientists set out to answer several questions about commercial-scale UV light processing of mushrooms. Among them: Does it produce consistently high levels of vitamin D and does it adversely affect other nutrients in mushrooms? They compared button mushrooms exposed to UVB light, those exposed to natural sunlight and those kept in the dark. The UVB-exposed mushrooms got a dramatic boost in vitamin D (700 percent more of the vitamin than those mushrooms exposed to no light) and the UVB processing had no effect on levels of vitamin C, folate, riboflavin, niacin and a host of other essential nutrients.

Power through an afternoon slump by planning ahead. Pack these nutrient-rich foods and you won’t be reaching for coffee and sugar at 3 p.m.

Whether a late night, early morning or intense workday has hijacked your energy, the forecast for the rest of the day is bleak: serious yawning followed by a search for a suitable alternative to the nap you’re craving. Instead of reaching for a sugary snack to help you stay awake during your morning meeting or power through an afternoon slump, try this stay-awake strategy: Snack on perfectly portable, fatigue-fighting foods, like whole grain crackers, walnuts, dark chocolate, and watermelon. These nine picks will perk you up in no time.

PUMPKIN SEEDS

The fatigue-fighter: Magnesium

If your 30-minute workout leaves you feeling like you just climbed Mt. Everest, you might be low on magnesium. When researchers at the U.S. Agricultural Research Service restricted intake of the mineral among 13 women ages 47 to 75 for 4 months, they found that those with magnesium deficiencies required more oxygen uptake during physical activity, used more energy, and therefore tired more easily. Snack on ¼ cup of pumpkin seeds and you’ll take care of about half of your recommended daily allowance, 310 mg for women (320 mg for ages 31-plus) and 400 mg for men (420 mg for ages 31-plus).

YOGURT

The fatigue-fighter: Probiotics

A stomachache could spell sleepiness if you’re among the more than 1 million people in the United States who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Because research suggests that an imbalance in microorganisms in the digestive tract is partially to blame for CFS, Swedish researchers tested the effects of eating yogurt rich in probiotics—“good bacteria” that aids digestive health—on 15 CFS patients. After eating 200 mL of yogurt twice daily for 4 weeks, 14 of 15 study subjects reported improvements in fatigue symptoms, physical health or mental health.

WHEAT BRAN CEREAL

The fatigue-fighter: Fiber

You know that fiber can help you fight fat, and it turns out the nutrient can also help you feel more awake. Researchers at the University of Cardiff in Wales found that people who ate high-fiber wheat bran cereal suffered less emotional distress, experienced fewer cognitive difficulties, and were less fatigued than their counterparts who did not eat as much fiber. Study participants reported a 10 percent increase in energy levels and reduced fatigue 2 weeks after increasing their fiber intake. The U.K. scientists credited these improvements to better digestive health.

WHOLE GRAINS

The fatigue-fighter: Complex carbohydrates

They might be a diet taboo, but carbs are essential to boosting energy. To stay out of a slump, pick complex carbohydrates such as whole grain crackers or a bowl of oatmeal over refined carbs, like foods made from white flour. The body digests and releases complex carbs slowly, keeping your blood sugar (and your mood) stable. Simple sugars, like those found in sweets and processed foods, on the other hand, provide a quick burst of energy but cause your blood sugar to plummet just as quickly as it spiked.

WALNUTS

The fatigue-fighter: Omega-3 fatty acids

Belgian researchers found that patients with CFS had low levels of omega-3 fatty acids, and those with the most severe fatigue symptoms exhibited the greatest deficiencies. Another study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that the alpha-linolenic acid, the omega-3 fatty acid found in walnuts, may help relieve depression symptoms, which commonly contribute to CFS. Up your omega-3 intake with a 1-ounce serving (1/4 cup, shelled) of walnuts for 190 calories.

DARK CHOCOLATE

The fatigue-fighter: Polyphenols

If you’re going to spring for sweets, be smart about your selection. Researchers at Hull York Medical School in the United Kingdom provided 10 CFS patients with 45 g of chocolate each day for 2 months. Study subjects received either dark chocolate or white chocolate that had been dyed brown. Those eating the dark chocolate reported significantly less fatigue. The scientists suggest that polyphenols in dark chocolate increase levels of the happiness-boosting brain chemical serotonin and thus reduce feelings of fatigue.

TEA

The fatigue-fighters: Caffeine and l-theanine

Coffee beats out tea when it comes to caffeine, but your cup of joe is missing an important fatigue-fighting ingredient: l-theanine. When paired with caffeine, the amino acid found naturally in tea improves cognition more effectively than caffeine alone, according to a study published in Biological Psychology. When study subjects consumed a combination of caffeine (150 mg) and l-theanine (250 mg), they reported a host of cognitive benefits, including improved alertness, memory, and reaction time as well as decreased mental fatigue.

WATERMELON

The fatigue-fighter: Water

If you’re feeling fatigued on a hot day or after a sweaty workout, the cause may be as simple as dehydration, and the fix as easy as enjoying a delicious slice of summer fruit. In a recent study of athletes, 92 percent reported feeling fatigued when they limited water-rich foods and fluids for 15 hours. They also reported memory lapses and difficulty concentrating. If you can’t glug one more ounce of H2O, opt for leafy greens or melons. The bonus: Hydrating with water-dense foods won’t pack on the pounds. Enjoy a 1-cup serving of watermelon for only 46 calories.

RED BELL PEPPER

The fatigue-fighter: Vitamin C

Vitamin C is more than a cold fighter—the antioxidant also helps reduce oxidative stress, the result of too many free radicals in the body, another contributor to CFS. In a small study of 44 adults published in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, those who received 6 g of vitamin C every day for 2 weeks felt less fatigued. Study participants also had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. To get your C fix, enjoy 1 cup of sliced red bell pepper for only 29 calories and you’ll squeeze in almost 200 percent of your daily recommended vitamin C—that’s more than the amount in an entire orange.
